Senior Safety Tips: Protecting Your Savings from Scams

Retirees increasingly rely on the internet for banking, shopping, and staying in touch with loved ones. While the convenience is undeniable, it’s crucial to stay vigilant against online scams that target your hard-earned savings. One of the simplest yet most effective ways to protect yourself is by not clicking on links or opening emails unless you’re absolutely certain of their origin and legitimacy.

Why Retirees Are Targets

Scammers often target retirees because they know that many have substantial savings, pensions, or Social Security benefits. They use sophisticated tactics to trick you into revealing personal information or transferring money. These scams can appear in the form of emails, text messages, or even pop-up ads that seem legitimate. Once you click on a malicious link or open a harmful email attachment, you could unknowingly give scammers access to your financial accounts or personal data.

The Risks of Clicking on Suspicious Links

Clicking on a fraudulent link can lead to dire consequences. It could install malware on your computer or smartphone, allowing scammers to track your keystrokes or steal your passwords. Even worse, some scams trick you into entering your personal information on fake websites that look almost identical to the real ones. Before you know it, your bank account could be drained, or your identity could be stolen, leading to months or even years of financial and emotional distress.

How to Stay Safe

  • Verify the Source: Always double-check the sender’s email address or phone number. If something seems off, it probably is.
  • Look for Red Flags: Be wary of urgent messages, especially those asking for personal information or money. Scammers often try to create a sense of urgency to push you into making hasty decisions.
  • Use Trusted Websites: Only visit websites that you know and trust. If you’re unsure, type the web address directly into your browser instead of clicking on a link.
  • Ask for Help: If you’re uncertain about an email or message, don’t hesitate to ask a family member or friend for their opinion before taking any action.

Your financial security is too important to risk. By being cautious online and verifying the origin of emails and links before clicking, you can protect your savings from scammers. Remember, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Stay safe and protect what you’ve worked so hard to earn.

Legacy Insurance Advisors // aaron@legacyinsuranceadvisors.com

A Minnesota native, I moved to Oklahoma in the summer of 1997 to attend college at Oral Roberts University. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance. Shortly after graduating, I was privileged to begin my career with Bank of Oklahoma as a Financial Advisor. I spent 15 years educating, consulting and advising individuals on the importance of financial planning and I learned the value of helping people on a very practical level. During my time at BOK, I repeatedly encountered individuals in need of health and life insurance.

In 2018 I decided to leave BOK and partner with Legacy Insurance Advisors in my endeavor to help individuals with their health insurance and life insurance planning needs, in addition to financial services. Prior to joining Legacy, I met and married my beautiful wife, Michelle. We have been blessed with two lovely and lively children, Marshall (5) and Audrey (3). They are my greatest treasure. I spend a significant amount of time in Tulsa, Creek and Payne counties – helping individuals find the right health insurance and life insurance coverage to protect themselves and their families. One of the things I am most proud of as an insurance professional is the remarkable number of family and friends that are referred to me from existing clients.

Please call, text or email me if I can serve you and your family.
